Reading and Writing Workshop

Reading: Our focus this year is to implement Readers Workshop from Columbia Teachers College. The Readers Workshop model blends whole group instruction, small needs-based groups and individual conferring to guide readers through the application of decoding skills and five basic comprehension strategies.

  1. Determining what is important – identifying themes and diminishing focus on less important ideas or pieces of information
  2. Drawing inferences – combining background knowledge and textual information to draw conclusions and interpret facts
  3. Using prior knowledge –
  4. Asking Questions – wondering and inquiring about the book, before, during and after reading
  5. Creating Mental Images – Implementing the five senses to build images in the mind that enhance the experience of reading.

Writing: We engage our children in the Writer’s Workshop model where writers start by thinking and remembering small moments. Teachers and writers confer about their writing.

They learn to “pull back” from their writing and add more details. Writers Workshop provides an amazing window into our children’s understanding of written language! Writers collaborate to revise, edit, and publish. Our writers learn to incorporate the 6 traits of writing (content, organization, voice, fluency, word choice, and conventions).

Students write for a variety of styles including narrative, expository, persuasive, and creative and fiction

Everyday Math

We challenge students to use higher level thinking skills to solve math problems and explicitly teach problem solving strategies. The philosophy of the Everyday Mathematics Curriculum includes the following:

  1. Develop conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills in arithmetic, data, probability, geometry, algebra, and functions.
  2. Link mathematics to everyday situations.
  3. Link past experiences to new concepts.
  4. Make considerable use of partner and small-group activities.
  5. Include hands-on activities and explorations
  6. Build fact power through daily oral practice, conceptual activities, and games.
  7. Encourage use and sharing of multiple strategies.
  8. Provide a wide variety of assessment opportunities.
  9. Encourage home-school partnerships.

Our Science instruction is based upon an inquiry-based program called the National Science Resources Center. Modules at each grade level provide hands-on experiences and opportunities for teaching scientific writing skills. A typical science lesson involves four components:

  1. Engage and encounter known and unknown science concepts,
  2. Explore and investigate life science, physical science and earth science,
  3. Reflect and explain their thinking and reasoning
  4. Apply and extend new learning.

Head Start

Head Start is a Federal program that promotes school readiness for children ages 3 to 5 by enhancing their cognitive, social and emotional development.  Head Start works to support healthy families that are actively involved and engaged. Children and families receive services and education in the areas of health/nutrition, family support, social emotional development and parenting.
